Hi,
I have learnt that:
You need smoke. (Not common)
You needn't smoke. (Common)
Need you smoke? (Not common)
Now I would like to remove my confusion by asking about "need have + 3rd form":
You need have gone there. (Is it uncommon?)
You needn't have paid the bill. (I think it's common, am I right?)
Need she have read that book? (Is it uncommon?)
